Ed was born on July 18, 1935 in Maracay, Venezuela to Eduardo Antonio Villanueva Urbaneja and Josefina Nuñez de Cáceres de Villanueva. He attended the NY Military Academy and Marion Military Institute as part of his education in the US, before returning to Venezuela where he met and married Z. Mercedes Blanco in 1964. They raised one daughter, Mercedes Josefina and moved to Tampa, Florida in August of 1981. Ed and Mercedes remained residents of the Tampa Bay area until today.
Ed was a true renaissance man and was never content to sit still or stop learning. After retiring he developed many passions and became a volunteer fire fighter, an EMT, a Chef and finally the role that brought him the most joy for 15 years: Surgical First Assistant. He taught many brand new med students and medical personnel the ropes of the craft and never stopped missing the work, his colleagues and the patients that came through his care. Ed was known to all for his kind and sweet disposition, his willingness to always lend a hand, a smile and a “hello” to anyone that crossed his path.
Ed was preceded in death by his father, Eduardo, his mother, Josefina, his sister, Sylvia and his brothers Carlos and Diego. He is survived by his wife Z. Mercedes, his daughter Mercedes Josefina, son in law Michael Scott, granddaughter Emily Ann, sisters Mercedes (Nena) and Yolanda and several nieces and nephews.
A public viewing will be held on Saturday, November 17th from 5-7 pm with a funeral service at 7 pm at Gonzalez Funeral home located at 7209 North Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa, FL 33614.
