Went to meet the Lord on Sunday, October 26th , one day after his 88th birthday. Born in Chuluota, Florida, he lived most of his life in the Tampa area, graduating from Hillsborough High School. As a young man, he began pasturing at The Open Bible Pentecostal Church in Tampa, a position he held until his death. He was also the proprietor of Self Electric, and took great pride in being one of the early electrical contractors to receive his license from the state of Florida. He also helped bring about the rebirth of boxing in the Tampa Bay area when he opened a boxing gym in Ybor City, having regular monthly bouts there. He was instrumental in bringing about the Sunshine State Games for boxing in the state of Florida. He is survived by his niece, Vivian Self; nephew, Wayne Self; daughter, Gayle Sierens (Mike) Martin; three grandchildren, Cam, Luke, and Maddie Martin. He joins his wife, Betty in Heaven, who lost her battle with Alzheimer’s just six months ago. His funeral will be held at the church he founded, The Open Bible Pentecostal Church at 7602 N. Orleans Ave in Tampa on Saturday, Nov 1st at 11am. In lieu of flowers, we encourage you to make donations to Lifepath Hospice who faithfully cared for Floyd and Betty during their final months.
