On Sunday, January 10, 2021, Captain Gordon Douglas Ferguson passed away at the age of 79.

Doug Ferguson was born in Buffalo, New York on October 29th, 1941 to his Father, Gordon Samuel Ferguson, and his Mother, Barbara Halcrow Ferguson, now deceased. His childhood was spent loving Christmas, becoming the Boston Red Sox’s number one fan, and spending summers on Great Diamond Island, his favorite place in the world. He was very proud to have graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in 1962, where he also was a photo editor for the school paper. Doug Ferguson was a member of the U.S. Naval Reserves and a Merchant Mariner. His lifetime love of sailing led him to spend 43 years in his shipping career culminating with him becoming a ship's captain. His work allowed him to travel around the world before he settled down with his wife and son in Portland, Maine to guide large ships in and out of Portland harbor as a Pilot. They moved to Tampa in March 1980 where he was a Tampa Bay Pilot for 25 years before his happy retirement in 2005.

He is survived by Angela Brennan Ferguson, his wife of 51 years. He is also survived by his son Gordon Darren Ferguson, daughter-in-law Toscha Ferguson, grandchildren Kaylyn, Sean, and David, brother Bruce Ferguson, sister-in-law Paula Ferguson, and nephews Sam and Doug Ferguson.

He loved baseball, the state of Maine, his Island friends, his daughter-in-law Toscha’s chocolate chip cookies, lunches at Malio’s, photography, his career as a ship captain, and getting a really good deal.

Fair Winds and a Following sea, Doug. You will be missed.

To Angela, Darren, Toscha, Kaylyn, Sean and David,
Our sincere condolences and sympathy for the loss of Doug, my brother-in-law who I chatted with and visited with many times over the years and always enjoyed his company. The first time I went to Florida and bought a house, Doug and Angela were tremendously helpful and gracious with their time. Doug helped me with many projects at the house. We enjoyed the wonderful hospitality of Doug and Angela in Great Diamond Island, with Doug touring us on the golf cart. Great memories, great person, wonderful family he raised. We'll miss him. Sincerely Leo, Kathy , Anya, Maureen and Patrick

Dear Angie and Family,

One of my favorite memories is of Doug, Peter, Fred Giggey, Vin Leto and Bill having a serious consult over our inoperable golf cart, all sitting on our front steps. Needless to say beer was involved. The perfect picture of male consultation and island co-operation.

He was a good man and he will be missed. Our sincere sympathies.

Barbara and Bill

Bon voyage my brother. You are on the bridge, in charge, my captain. Mom, dad, Gin and El your loyal crew. Eight years apart, I saw you so little and loved you so much. Til we meet again, your little brother, Bruce.
