James R. Howell

Born on November 1, 1939, in the coal-mining community of Red Ash, Virginia, Jim was the son of Marvin and Opal Howell. Raised in the mountains of Southwest Virginia, he developed at an early age the values that would guide him throughout his life: hard work, integrity, self-reliance, and a deep sense of loyalty to family and friends. He attended Richlands High School, where his natural curiosity and mechanical aptitude began to emerge, foreshadowing a lifelong passion for electronics and communications.

Following high school, Jim proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the pre-Vietnam War era. During his military service, he distinguished himself through courage and dedication and was awarded the Cross of Honor for Valor, a reflection of the character and commitment that defined his life.

After completing his military service, Jim settled in Tampa, Florida, where he met the love of his life, Claire Montgomery. The two were married on November 30, 1963, and together built a life centered on devotion, perseverance, and family. Their marriage spanned more than six decades, creating a legacy of love that continues through their children, grandchildren, and extended family.

A gifted technician with an entrepreneurial spirit, Jim established Marine Radio & Radar Service, where he worked as a self-employed Marine Radio and Radar Repair Mechanic for more than 30 years. Known throughout the maritime community for his expertise, problem-solving abilities, and willingness to help others, he earned the respect of colleagues, customers, and fellow mariners alike. Whether troubleshooting complex navigation systems or mentoring others in the trade, Jim approached every challenge with patience, determination, and professionalism.

His passion for communication extended far beyond his profession. Jim was a dedicated and accomplished amateur radio operator, proudly holding the call sign W4LNI. Ham radio was not simply a hobby for him; it was a lifelong pursuit that connected him with people around the world and allowed him to serve his community through communications and fellowship. He was actively involved with the Tampa Amateur Radio Club during its years at the historic former Coast Guard Brig on Davis Islands and was well known among fellow operators for his knowledge, enthusiasm, and enduring commitment to the amateur radio community.

Jim also devoted many hours as a volunteer aboard the American Victory Ship & Museum. Recognizing the importance of preserving maritime and communications history, he helped establish the ship's amateur radio club and played an instrumental role in ensuring that future generations could experience and appreciate the technology and traditions he loved. His efforts helped bridge the gap between history and innovation, leaving a lasting impact on the organization and its volunteers.

Above all else, Jim's greatest pride was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He loved sharing stories, teaching practical skills, lending a helping hand, and spending time with the people he cherished most. His quiet strength, quick wit, generous spirit, and unwavering dependability will be remembered by all who knew him.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Opal Howell.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Claire Howell; his daughters, Lori Brocato and her husband Tony, Leah Swarts and her husband Steve, and Christy Howell; his son, Charlie Howell and his wife Dani; his sister, Alice Childress and her husband Jerry; his niece and nephew, Brian Childress and Beth Tanner; and his treasured grandchildren, Kelsie Soto and her husband Tim, Clara Swarts and her husband Dan, Matthew Powless, Gillian Powless, Declan Howell, and Emersyn Howell.

A service with military honors will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida, with honors rendered by the MacDill Air Force Base Honor Guard. Arrangements are being handled by Gonzalez Funeral Home.

The Howell family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated caregivers and staff of the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital, Suncoast Hospice, and the many friends whose kindness, support, and companionship enriched Jim's life and brought comfort to his family during his final days.

Though he is no longer with us in person, Jim's legacy lives on through the family he cherished, the lives he touched, and the countless conversations carried across the airwaves by a man who never stopped connecting with others.
