James Nick Reader marked his 81st birthday on August 11, 2026. Just one day later, he left this world peacefully, surrounded by love. Jimmy often reflected on the abundance in his life, measuring his wealth not in possessions, but in the love he received and shared. He wished to extend his heartfelt gratitude to all who enriched his journey with kindness and affection.
He was always so thankful for his son Nick and daughter-in-law Melanie. Nick and Melanie included him in every moment of their life, from big celebrations to Sunday dinners to weekly phone calls and visits throughout their busy life. No matter what was happening, they always made time to call Dad, share a laugh, and say, “I love you.” Though they were generous with gifts to him, there were no greater gifts they gave than their three sons: Tre, Troy, and Ty. He found the greatest happiness in sharing their sports and daily lives, asking for every detail and proudly bragging about the three of them at every opportunity. He was thankful for each memory they gave him.
Jimmy was also embraced by the love of his bonus daughters and their families: Rebecca and Mario, along with their children Gaspar and Lochlan; Rachel and Stacy; Heather and family; and Vanessa. Over the years, they shared many visits, phone calls, and plenty of laughter. Gaspar and Pop enjoyed a special bond—celebrating birthdays together and building memories through countless calls and overnight stays. Lochlan delighted in singing, reading, and performing for Pop, carefully preparing her elaborate shows to bring him joy.
Friends held a special place in Jimmy’s heart. He was deeply grateful for each friendship, remaining loyal not only to his friends but to their families as well, always keeping in touch across generations. Many of his friendships began in childhood and only grew stronger over the years, enduring a lifetime. Jimmy welcomed new friends along the way, and he never lost touch or let a disagreement come between him and someone he cared about. His days were filled with lunches, ball games, and long, laughter-filled phone calls that often stretched for hours.
Jimmy cherished the bond he shared with his mother, Christine Scourtes, as well as his sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Charley Greacen. He especially appreciated his nephew Scott and wife Christine, who kept him involved in their lives with regular calls and updates as they began their own careers and family. Alexandra, his niece, always remembered to call or check in, never missing a birthday or special moment.
He loved to laugh and recount a tale, facts never getting in the way of a good story. Jimmy lit up the room, and he lit up our lives. Jimmy was a shining example of II Corinthians 9:6-7: “He who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully…for God loves a cheerful giver.” Jimmy wanted a thank-you letter to those he loved. Thank you all for enriching his life.
Jimmy asked for a private service for his children and grandchildren, which will be held on Thursday, August 20. Please remember him with a smile and know that he loved you all.
