

James was born in 1941 in Shreveport, LA to the late Joseph Louis Stephens and Edna Mae Stephens.
James proudly served his country in the United States Navy for more than 20 years, retiring as a Master Chief Petty Officer. Following his distinguished military career, he built a successful second career in sales, retiring again as Vice President of Sales for Balmar Printing and Graphics. Never one to stop serving others, he later became a Certified VA Service Officer, helping more than 1,000 disabled veterans obtain the benefits they had earned through their service.
James was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ Catholic Church in Winchester, VA. James loved to watch old western movies, particularly anything with Clint Eastwood and John Wayne. He loved meeting new people and spending time with fellow Veterans. He enjoyed long drives and never turned down a sweet treat. He will be remembered for his love of God and his country.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years Rena Dea Stephens.
James is survived by his daughters Misti Harmon and Karin Champion; grandchildren, Jake Harmon, Patrick (Erin) Harmon, Corie (Austin) Coppage, Hunter (Kiana) Champion; great-grandchildren, Tyson Coppage and Callan Coppage; sister, Julia Gallo; sister-in-law Connie German and beloved cat “Snowball”. He also leaves behind many extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on July 31, 2026 at 10am at Christ the King Catholic Church in Tampa. A celebration of life will be held at Blount & Curry Life Center - MacDill on August 8, 2026 at 1pm. Interment with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery will take place at a later date.
