John “Jack” David Moroney, 93, peacefully passed away on July 3rd, 2024, with his beloved wife Carol by his side. A cherished husband, father, papa, uncle, physician, and friend, John will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
John, was born on January 3, 1931, to John and Lillian (née Andersen) Moroney in Waterbury, CT. He went on to attend Holy Cross College in Worchester, MA and Saint Louis University Medical School, where he met Carol, a nursing student. They married on June 9, 1956, and shared 68 years of love and adventure. Following graduation from medical school John joined the US Air Force and started his pediatric residency at St. Christopher’s Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia.
After 10 years of active duty, John resigned his commission as a Major and he and Carol settled their growing family in Tampa. Throughout his career, John was known for his tireless dedication to his Tampa patients, St. Joseph’s Hospital, and his passion for serving others. John enjoyed the outdoors and served as the volunteer physician for the Boy Scouts of America for 40 years. His commitment to community service was evident in his volunteering for Catholic Charities Medical Clinics, St. Joseph’s Hospital Mobile Pediatric Clinic, the Kid’s Café, the Judeo-Christian Clinic, and several mission trips to Central America. John was also deeply involved in the Christ the King Catholic Church community as a lector for 20 years and a member of the Knights of Columbus. But more than anything, John was a devoted husband and father. He loved spending time with his family, fixing anything and everything at the house, telling stories, and watching baseball—especially when it involved his sons, grandsons, or his favorite teams, the Rays and Cardinals.
In their retirement, John and Carol embraced their love for learning and travel, exploring the world together through Road Scholar tours, from Costa Rica to Russia.
John was preceded in death by his parents John and Lillian, his sister and brother-in-law Maureen and Norm Hastings and sister-in-law Vicky Brink, He is survived by his loving wife, Carol, his brother-in-law Roger Brink, his children, Chris Reddy (Patrick), Jim (Julie), Bill, Susie Johnson (Mike), Kathleen Monahan (Michael), Patti Hoag (David), Tom (Shannon), Mary Comesanas (George). He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Meghan Whisenhunt, Erin Reddy, Patrick Reddy, Ryan Moroney, Caitlin McVey, Caroline Johnson, Kevin Johnson, Matthew Johnson, Bridget Hoag Nett, Tom Hoag, Kelly Hoag, Andrew Hoag, Jack Moroney, James Moroney and Amanda Moroney, seven great-grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
A visitation will be held at Blount and Curry Funeral Home, 605 S. MacDill Avenue on Monday, July 15th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm and a rosary service will begin at 7:00pm. A mass of Christian burial will be on Tuesday, July 16 at Christ the King Catholic Church at 10:00am.
