John L. Thorne

John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

John was born in 1933 in Long Branch, New Jersey to Catherine and Charles Thorne. He was one of three children; he had a brother, Charles and a sister, Barbara.

John grew up in the Bronx, NY and graduated from CUNY Baruch College in New York, NY. After graduating college, John entered the US Army and was stationed in Germany for the majority of his military service.

When he returned from the Army, he served in the National Guard. Not long after, he met his soon-to-be-wife, Dorothy Schaeffer of Queens, New York. They were married on May 27, 1961 and settled in Queens, New York where they had their first two children, Kathleen and John.

They moved to Long Island, New York and grew their family with the birth of their third child, Susan. They lived in their home on Long Island for 57 happy years. In 2022, John and Dorothy moved to Tampa, FL.

John had a successful career as a Tax Accountant for Northrop Grumman. In his free time, John was a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, a lector and Eucharistic minister at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Woodbury, NY. Most of all, John enjoyed spending time with his family (especially his 6 grandchildren), golfing and enjoying good food. John and Dorothy also enjoyed vacationing with his brother, Charlie and sister-in-law, Irene.

John was a true and chivalrous gentleman, always thinking of others before himself and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Dorothy, his three children; Kathleen (Bruce), John (Joan) and Susan (Victor), and six grandchildren; Nancy, Nicole, Stephen, Kristin, Michael and Natalie. John recently celebrated his 90th birthday with his entire loving family.
