
Karen was born in Dubuque, Iowa, to Francis John Splinter and Myrtle "Chris" Clemens. Karen grew up in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area, where she excelled in school, played the clarinet in the school band, and enjoyed her time as a Job's Daughter. After high school, her family relocated to Atlanta. Karen attended the University of Georgia, where she would meet the "love-of-her life", Al Fleming, Jr. Karen and Al were married in 1962. Al joined the United States Air Force where travels took them to many wonderful tours/states: Texas, Florida, South Carolina, Illinois and Hawaii. Karen was involved with many military support organizations, and was president of the Charleston Officers' Wives group. Karen was tremendously supportive of her children; whether it was a scholastic or sporting events, she was there to cheer them on.
Many of her friends would know Karen for her wonderful smile, supportive nature, quick wit and great sense of humor. She was a marvelous cook, one who keep up on current events and enjoyed discussing politics.
Karen is survived by her daughter, Tracie Merson (Michael); her son, Mathew (Irina); granddaughters, Allison, Catherine, and Victoria; dearest friend, Phyllis Krieger. Preceded in death by; her parents, Francis and Myrtle Splinter; brothers, Bradley and Richard; and by her daughter, Alison Alexia Fleming.
Karen's family would hope that in her honor, friends would support a stroke patients' organization of their choice.
A memorial will be held later in 2021, to honor our beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Friend.
Our hearts are broken at the loss of this fantastic spirit, yet comforted in the knowledge that she is in deed with our Heavenly Father and Our Lord, Jesus Christ.
