

Roland was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on June 8, 1938, to parents L. Roland & Willie Young. He was raised in Covington, Louisiana, and eventually moved to Daytona Beach, Florida where he graduated from Seabreeze High School in 1955. He continued his studies at the University of Florida, earning his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree in 1961. He was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He later received a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Auburn University in 1966.
A licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Florida, Roland enjoyed a long and distinguished career in mechanical engineering. He specialized in the design, construction, and commissioning of mechanical systems for commercial, industrial, governmental, and institutional facilities. His professional achievements were recognized with Engineer of the Year nominations by the Central Florida chapters of the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). He remained actively involved in the profession as a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, a Life Member of both ASHRAE and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), a long-time member of ASPE (1975–2010), and a Senior Member of the Florida Engineering Society.
Outside of his professional life, Roland was an avid golfer with an 8 to 10 handicap. He enjoyed jogging, boating, saltwater fishing, Auburn football and spending time with his grandchildren. His passion for sharing knowledge and encouragement with others, both professionally and personally, leaves a lasting impact on all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his soul mate and life partner, Sandra Walker (RLSF), and his parents, L. Roland and Willie Young.
Roland is Survived by his loving family Jeffrey Walker (Meagan), Michael Walker (Megan), David Walker (Garnet), Angela Reid (Michael), Adam Walker (Maria), and Matthew Walker (Amy) and beloved grandchildren Gabrielle, Nicholas (their mother Cresia Walker), Madeline, Meryl, Miles, Caden, Christian, Benjamin, Emily, Matthew, Zachary, William, Amelia, Julia, Bennett, and Laurel.
The family will hold a celebration of life visitation on Friday, May 29, 2026, from 6 – 9 PM at Blount & Curry Life Event Center, 605 S MacDill Ave, Tampa, FL.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of L. Roland Young, Jr. to First Tee Tampa Bay at Get Involved – First Tee – Tampa Bay.
