

Lawrence William Fumea, 90, of Tampa, Florida, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2024. Born on December 7, 1933, in Cokeville, Pennsylvania, Larry (as he was known) was a graduate of Derry High School, class of 1951. In 1953, he moved to Florida to pursue his dream for an education at Saint Petersburg Junior College, and later he earned a bachelor’s degree in building construction from the University of Florida in 1963.
On August 17, 1963, Larry married Mary Elaine Plescia in Gainesville, Florida and together they headed for his first job in Louisiana with the Austin Company. Larry spent his career in construction, working for ten years across the southeastern United States for The Austin Company. Larry later settled in Tampa, Florida, where he and Mary Elaine raised their two children, Valerie and Vincent. Over the next 40 years, he worked for the Matthews Corporation and Spaw-Glass Construction, owned Trio Construction, and spent his last ten years as a project manager for the University of South Florida.
In his spare time, Larry enjoyed working on his home, always improving and updating it. He was an avid bowler and participated in numerous leagues alongside his wife, achieving a perfect 300 game. Larry also had a deep love for animals, often taking in strays and caring for many dogs and cats over the years. He will be survived by Turbo, Robbie, and Spunky.
Larry will also be survived by his wife, Mary Elaine; his daughter, Valerie Kasper; his son, Vincent Fumea; his grandchildren, Keith and Katherine Kasper; and his sister, Harriet DeGruttola. Funeral services will be held on September 21, 2024, from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. at Blount & Curry Life Event Center, located at 605 South MacDill Avenue, Tampa, FL 33609.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay or the Florida Gulf Coast Alzheimer’s Association in Larry’s memory.
