Louis was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico on February 23, 1934. He went to high school at Monroe High School, Bronx, NY and went on to earn a Bachelor of the Arts degree from Wagner College, Staten Island, NY.
Sports were a huge part of Lou’s life. Often absent from functions, there was a running joke in the family. When questioned as to his whereabouts, the answer was always the same: “he’s somewhere playing ball.” An accomplished high school and collegiate athlete, Lou went on to become a professional minor league baseball player with the Cincinnati Reds. Lou had a successful run playing in Texas and Florida (hoping to get to “the Show”) but his athletic career was cut short when he went to serve his country in the United States Army.
After an honorable discharge from the service, Lou went on to receive a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
Committed to helping challenged youth, he began his profession in the New York State Dept. of Social Services in New Hampton, NY. He then worked and excelled in various positions within the New York State Division for Youth, earning continual promotions and eventually retiring at the pinnacle of his career. In addition to being devoted to work and family, Lou never stopped being an outstanding athlete. He continued to excel in sports by being a champion softball player, bowler and golfer in Orange County, New York.
Louis settled in Tampa, Florida where he continued to follow his beloved sports (Tampa Bay Rays and Buccaneers), fostered his spirituality in his church, and enjoyed playing with his grandson. He was a kind, gentle, generous man with a wonderful wit. He was liked by all that were fortunate enough to meet him. He will be greatly missed.
Louis is survived by his wife of 24 years, Diana Borchand Marcano of Florida; daughter, Marilyn Marcano Friedly of Ohio; sister, Julie Hernandez of Georgia; stepson, Robert Borchand (Susana) of Florida; grandson, Richard Borchand of Florida and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother, Louisa Jimenez Ingraham; father, Raimundo Marcano; stepfather, Thomas Ingraham; and his first wife and mother of his daughter, Kathryn Schmitt Marcano.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 28, 2018 at 10:00 am at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 12708 N. Dale Mabry Hwy, Tampa, FL 33618. He will be laid to rest with military honors in a private ceremony at Garden of Memories, Tampa, Florida.
