Dr. Marcos Francisco Lorenzo, born on October 7, 1945, in Guantanamo, Cuba, to the late Raquel and Francisco Lorenzo, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2024, at Tampa General Hospital, an institution that was near and dear to him. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend to many, and a respected physician in the Tampa community.
Marcos, affectionately known as “Panchi” by those closest to him, emigrated from communist Cuba and touched US soil in Tampa on February 15th, 1961. While the departure from his homeland at such a young age was monumental, he quickly developed a love and pride for this country that manifested into acts of community service and political involvement.
In 1968, Marcos married the love of his life, Maria, who had also emigrated from Cuba to Tampa seven years prior. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised two daughters. They prioritized God, family, education, and assimilation into American culture, while passionately preserving their Cuban and Hispanic heritage.
Marcos began his profound devotion to medicine after attaining a BA from Stetson University in Deland in 1967. He then received his medical degree by completing a six-year Medical School Program at the University of Seville, College of Medicine in 1973. In 1975, he completed his post-graduate education at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, N.J. and University of Miami School of Medicine, Office of Medical Education.
Marcos’ professional achievements are boundless, beginning primarily with his practice of General Family Medicine in Tampa since 1976. His career and work spread across several organizations, including the Hospital of Tampa, Town and Country Hospital, Centro Asturiano Hospital, Family Care Center - Healthpark of Tampa General Healthcare, The Hillsborough County Hospital, and culminated at Tampa General Hospital with which he was affiliated since 1981. Marcos retired from Tampa General Hospital in 2012, having dedicated over 30 years of service, with his most prominent position as Vice President of Governmental Affairs and Corporate Compliance. In this role, he lobbied on behalf of TGH, bringing massive attention to and funds for the hospital. After retiring from TGH, Marcos worked as Director of Business Development at MacDonald Training Center, where he served by helping people with disabilities in vocational training and to find employment in the local community.
Marcos belonged to a multitude of professional associations, too many to list, and took pride in serving others and working endlessly to improve lives.
Marcos is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Maria; his two daughters, Ana Lorenzo Good (Jeffrey Good) and Cristina Lorenzo (Arthur Kastello); and the grandchildren he adored, Bradley and Emily Good and Gianna and Mila Kastello.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, October 24 at 6 PM with a Vigil Service beginning at 7 PM at Blount and Curry Life Event Center (605 S MacDill Ave, Tampa, FL 33609).
