Maria Hatges Howey (87) of Tampa, FL, passed away on November 28th, 2022. Maria was born in Mason City, Iowa, on April 28th, 1935, to Andrew and Maria Hatges, immigrants from Nea Figaleia (Zourtsa), Elis, Greece.
She attended the University of Iowa on a voice scholarship and received her Bachelor of Arts (1958) degree. Moving to Tampa in 1965, she remained a loyal fan of the Hawkeyes and her hometown. Maria was an accomplished interior designer who worked for several high-end interior design firms. She was a proud member of the Athena Society and an active community volunteer. She was a talented singer who performed with several local organizations, including: The Master Chorale, the Falk Theatre, and Rodeph Sholom Synagogue. Maria enjoyed extensive travels, attending musicals and the opera. She was an avid patron of the arts and symphony.
She was preceded in death by her sister Constance Hatges (Speronis) Cave (2012) and her husband John R. Howey (2019).
She is survived by her sons Andrew McDermott, of Reston, VA; John McDermott (Karen), of Rockwall, TX; and daughter Dorothy Howey Bardin (Matt) of Tampa; grandchildren Richard McDermott, Benjamin McDermott, Natalie Bardin, Charles Bardin, and James Bishop (Christine).
Maria remained thankful for her lifelong friendships, the love of her family, and all the gifts she experienced throughout her life.
She was a longtime member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in South Tampa, where funeral services will be held on January 7th, 2023, at 2:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in honor of Maria made to Athena Society Tampa, Faith Café Tampa, or Meals on Wheels of Tampa.
