Sister Mary Glavin 86, passed away Tuesday, November 2, at her home in Tampa. She was born in Albany, NY, the daughter of William and Ruth Glavin. Sister Mary professed her vows as a Sister of the Holy Names in 1959. Mary’s years of ministry can best be described as “lifelong educator”. She held two Masters degrees, one in Administration from Barry University and another in Counseling from the University of Florida. She taught at parish schools in Silver Spring and Albany.
In 1968, she became the first principal of the girls’ elementary division of the Academy of the Holy Names in Tampa. Sister Mary also served in the Academy’s high school as a theology teacher, guidance counselor and assistant principal. In 1978 Sister Mary shifted her focus to school and parish ministry, serving as a family life minister. In 1986, she returned to the Academy in Tampa, where she remained until her retirement. Over the years, Mary developed deep connections with her co-workers and maintained supportive relationships with former students.
When asked how she wanted to be remembered, Mary said, “as someone who loved God, loved her family and friends, loved being an SNJM, who tried to show compassion to others, and who lived life happily and fully.” Those who knew Mary would agree with this assessment. She will be remembered for her bright smile and willingness to share her time and energy in the service of others.
There will be a Memorial mass celebrated at the Academy of the Holy Names on Tuesday, November 24 at 11:00 a.m. Her burial will be at Myrtle Hill Cemetery on Saturday, November 14, at noon.
