Miguel Antonio Acevedo of Valrico, Florida, 88, was welcomed into heaven’s gates on December 21, 2024 at 11:20 AM. Miguel was the beloved husband of Maria Antonia Acevedo for 53 years; loving father of Maria Teresa Johnson (Lee), Michelangelo Acevedo (Linda), and Marco Antonio Acevedo; and devoted grandfather to Alexis Vazquez, Nathan Acevedo, Sofia Johnson, Noah Acevedo, Marissa Johnson, and Isabella Johnston.
Born in the mountains of Utuado, Puerto Rico, and predeceased by his parents Teresa Rivera and Emilio Acevedo, he was the oldest of six siblings (Nexy, Mirse, William, Edwin, Gregorio, and Blanca). Miguel joined the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War before moving to New York. Wanting to pursue his dreams of starting his own business, he settled in Wilmington, Delaware. It was there he met his beautiful wife, Maria where they became pillars in the community, opening and owning Sweet House Bakery and Sweet House Apartments from the years 1968-1997. Known as “Don Miguel,” he was best recognized as a beloved baker and a dedicated landlord, owning and managing apartments primarily occupied by minority families, predominantly Puerto Rican, who had come to the mainland to establish themselves and pursue their own dreams. In 1999, they moved to Valrico, Florida and savored the joys of being retired in the Sunshine State. What filled him with the greatest pride was sharing his sage advice with younger generations and expressing his profound love for his family. From helping his mother, sister Blanca, and brother Greg establish themselves in Wilmington to sponsoring his loving wife’s family to come from Cuba and supporting them until they found their footing, his life was a testament to generosity and devotion.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to LifePath Hospice, who served as a tremendous blessing to Miguel and his family in his final days before being welcomed into the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
A visitation for Miguel will be held Saturday, December 28, 2024 from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Gonzalez Funeral Home, 7209 North Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa, FL 33614. A service will occur Saturday, December 28, 2024 from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM, 7209 North Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa, FL 33614.
