Miguel “Mike” Cuervo Sr., 85, loving and caring father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away Saturday, December 29th, 2018 at Melech Hospice House in Tampa, FL from a short battle of cancer, surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Tampa, FL where he lived the majority of his life. He is preceded in death by his parents, Maximo and Teresa Cuervo, two brothers, Max and Edward Cuervo, his loving wife, Eva, and his beloved daughter, Sylvia Hinson. Miguel enlisted in the US Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps at the young age of 17 and fought in the Korean War. He fought in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. He received a Korean Service Medal, a United Nations Medal, and a Navy Occupation Medal and Letter of Commendation for saving a Japanese swimmer from drowning. After returning home he went to work for the US Postal Service, where he later retired. He was a long time Mason and Shriner and spent many years volunteering with both. He is survived by his sister Marta Cuervo-Romano of Tampa, his son Miguel Cuervo Jr. (Keely), daughter Nancy Cuervo of New York, grandson Jason Cuervo of Colorado, granddaughters Stephanie Hinson and Michelle Gerard both of Tampa and three great grandchildren, Aidan McDonald, Ana Mae Gerard and Carlos R. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 5th 2019 at 9am followed by services at 10am at Blount and Curry Funeral Home. 6802 Silvermill Drive, Tampa. Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens, Thonotosassa, FL In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
