Captain Ralph Suarez, USN Retired, of Tampa, Florida, was called home by the Lord on August 5, 2025, at the age of 83. Born in Tampa on September 18, 1941, Ralph grew up in the heart of Ybor City, surrounded by a large and loving extended family. His many cousins were more like siblings, and the warmth of that close-knit community shaped his lifelong devotion to family and tradition. Ralph was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Margaret Flagg Suarez; his parents, Gloria America Rodriguez and Benigno Suarez, Jr.; and his son-in-law, Charles Cammuse, Jr.. He is survived by his sister, Yvonne Bridwell, and his devoted daughters: Cheryl Suarez-Cammuse of Winter Springs, FL; Christina Suarez Conard and her spouse, Todd Conard, of Ruskin, FL; and Linda Suarez of Pinellas Park, FL.
He was a proud grandfather and great-grandfather, leaving behind a legacy of love and wisdom through his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Rachel Quittschreiber and her spouse, Justin; Michelle Maggiore; Matthew Cammuse and his spouse, Rachel, with their children: Madelyn, Carleigh, and Eliana: Rebekah Cammuse and her fiancé, Brandon, of Melbourne, FL; Anthony Conard; Emilee Vasquez and her spouse, Jorge, with their children: Elliott and Emmett; and Tiffany Hardy and her spouse, Justin, with their children: Addison, Thomas, and Helen. As a young boy, Ralph loved playing baseball with his father and developed a deep appreciation for music, becoming an accomplished clarinetist and pianist. At Florida State University, he earned a degree in business and was a proud member of the Marching Chiefs. It was also at FSU that he met the love of his life, Margaret, whose faith and love helped guide him to a strong Christian faith and led him to become an active and devoted member of the United Methodist Church. In a moment of surprise to all, Ralph announced after college that he had joined the United States Navy and was headed to Officer Training School. There, he was commissioned and trained as a navigator for the E-2 Hawkeye aircraft, beginning a distinguished military career and a life of adventure. After marrying Margaret, the couple began their Navy journey in Newfoundland, where they began building their family.
As Ralph proudly served in the United States Navy, he achieved the rank of Captain and many extraordinary accomplishments. He flew aboard E-2 Hawkeye aircraft off carriers in the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, and as he rose through the ranks to become one of the few officers entrusted to pilot aircraft carriers into and out of ports of call. His strategic brilliance led him to serve in Command-and-Control positions, directing fleet activities with precision and insight. His service took him to nearly every corner of the globe—except Asia and the Arctic—and his time in Antarctica was honored with a mountain named after him. Ralph’s stories of his travels and experiences were legendary. He shared them generously with his family and anyone who asked, weaving lessons of leadership, resilience, and humor into every tale. He was a man who loved celebrating life—whether through happy hours, good wine, or great food—and his love of family was contagious.
One of Ralph’s favorite traditions was beach vacations with his family. It began in his childhood with his mother and grandparents in Tampa and continued throughout his life. After retiring and settling back in Tampa, he joyfully carried on the tradition, welcoming all to join. He found deep happiness watching the children play in the sand, taking in the beauty of the sunset, and sharing laughter and stories during big family meals. These moments reflected the heart of who Ralph was—a man who cherished family, all types of music, and the joy of being together. Captain Suarez served his country with honor, courage, and commitment. His leadership and integrity left a lasting impression on all who knew him. He will be remembered not only for his service, but for his unwavering devotion to his family, his faith, and the values he held dear.
A Celebration of Life will be held to celebrate Ralph’s life and legacy at 1:00pm on August 16, 2025 at Gonzales Funeral Home located at: 7209 N Dale Mabry Hwy, Tampa FL 33614.
