Robert Thomas Dalechek

Robert was born on April 8, 1973, in Belleville, Illinois, and grew up in the Troy and St. Jacob area, graduating from Triad High School with the Class of 1991.

Robert spent much of his life working in lawn care and pest control, but to him, caring for lawns was much more than a job. It was something he genuinely loved. Robert took tremendous pride in his work, and anyone who spent time driving around with him knew there was a good chance he would point out a lawn he had treated or maintained. He loved being outdoors, working with his hands, and seeing the results of a job well done.

Robert's Christian faith was an important and deeply personal part of his life. He attended church when he could, watched church services online, and frequently read his Bible. He spoke openly with everyone about his faith and how much it meant to him. Through life's highs and lows, his relationship with God remained a source of strength and hope.

Robert had a remarkably generous heart. He had a habit of putting the needs of friends, and sometimes complete strangers, ahead of his own. He was kind, approachable, and could strike up a conversation with just about anyone. He also had a goofy side and loved making people laugh. To those who knew him well, Robert wasn't simply someone's brother. Robert was everyone's brother.

He also inherited his mother's love of animals. At his home in Gibsonton, Robert cared for three stray cats that had made his property their home. He fed them, watched over them, and made sure they were cared for. It was simply part of Robert's nature to look after those around him.

When he wasn't working, Robert enjoyed the simple things in life. He loved fishing from his front yard, taking long walks on the waterfront, reading, listening to music, and following sports. He enjoyed watching football and hockey, cheered for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and remained a loyal St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan, a connection to the area where he grew up.

Those who knew Robert will remember different things: his generosity, his faith, his sense of humor, his love for animals, the pride he took in a beautiful lawn, his love of sports, or simply a conversation with him that made them laugh. His family will remember all of those things, but most of all, they will remember a son, brother, uncle, and friend who cared about people and wanted them to know it.

Robert was preceded in death by his mother, Rebecca Jane (Main) Dalechek.

He is survived by his father, Richard Edward Dalechek, Sr.; his stepmom, Kathryn "Kitty" Dalechek; his brother, Richard Edward "Rick" Dalechek, Jr. and wife Debra; his sister, Lynn Marie (Dalechek) Steinhauff and husband Kirk; and his stepbrother, Ryan Maedge.

Robert is also survived by his nieces and nephew, Lexi (Dalechek) Fickert and husband Brendan, Tanner Dalechek and his partner Brittany Vinca, and Elizabeth Dalechek; as well as his great-nephew Theo Fickert and great-niece Harper Fickert. Although Robert never married or had children of his own, family was never something he defined only by blood or by a family tree.

A Celebration of Life for Robert will be held on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Tri Township Park Community Center (Upstairs), located at 410 Wickliffe St., Troy, Illinois 62294. The gathering will be casual, just as Robert would have wanted—a time to remember his life, tell stories, laugh, and celebrate the many lives he touched. Family and friends are warmly invited to come and share their memories of Robert.

Robert's life had its challenges, but through them he held tightly to his faith and continued to care about the people around him. That may be one of the simplest and most fitting ways to remember him:

He loved God. He cared about people. Robert was everyone's brother.
