He was born in Detroit, Michigan, and lived a life rich with curiosity, adventure, and love.
Robert was known for his honesty, sharp mind, and remarkable love of knowledge. A passionate reader and lifelong learner, he found joy in books, art, crosswords, history, and meaningful conversations. He had the rare gift of engaging anyone in thoughtful discussion, often sharing wisdom shaped by his experiences, travels, and the many people he met along the way.
After high school, Robert proudly served in the United States Air Force, where he worked as a fireman for 23 years. He retired as a Master Sergeant and was the recipient of numerous commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Award, Air and Space Longevity Service Award, and the Air Force Good Conduct Award. Following his military career, he earned a degree in drafting, continuing to apply his skills, curiosity, and work ethic.
Robert had a deep love for history, museums, and travel—especially his fascination with Egypt. He enjoyed creating photo boards for his family, researching genealogy, and building detailed family trees of his ancestors. His passion for history meant he could spend hours sharing stories and discoveries with those around him. Music was another joy in his life, and he especially loved “Lili Marlene” by Marlene Dietrich and “Butterfly” by Danyel Gérard. He enjoyed jokes and lighthearted moments, and he was immensely proud to have lived long enough to welcome great-great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Nancy Yaber Jackson, his loyal dog, Kissy, his daughters: Linda Murphy, Barbara Sorrells (Dak), Kathy Waits, and Cindy Tewksbury (David); brother-in-law Larry Haggerty, as well as many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren who love him dearly.
Robert was preceded in death by his mother, Leonore Anne Kunath, and his father, Wilbur Lowell Jackson; his maternal grandparents August Kunath and Lydia LeBlanc; paternal grandparents Roselda Castle and Robert Charles Jackson; and his siblings: Sally Keenan (Richard), Mary Jean Orr (Robert), Mary Joan Haggerty, Kathleen Keenan (Dennis), and Dana Jackson.
Robert’s legacy lives on in the knowledge he shared, the curiosity he inspired, and the love he gave so freely. His family will forever treasure the stories, lessons, laughter, and adventures he brought into their lives.
