Rufus F. Spurlock died at the age of 84 in Tampa, Florida. He was born September 23, 1931 in Hagan, Virginia and passed Saturday July 2, 2016 at Florida Hospital Tampa. Rufus was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. He was a disabled military veteran that proudly served his country through his twenty-one years in the US Air Force. Rufus retired from military life and set down roots in Tampa, Florida. Once in Tampa, he went to work for General Telephone & Electric Corporation(GTE). After a twenty-year career with GTE, he retired again. He is pre-deceased by his parents George Washington Spurlock and Susan (Hall) Spurlock, wife Violet Margaret Spurlock, daughter Della Marie (Spurlock) Halenda (Dave), and all fourteen of his brothers and sisters. He is survived by his son Glenn A. Spurlock and his wife Heidi of Land O’ Lakes, Florida, grandson Addison C. Bryan and Kimiko Tsuji of Orlando, Florida, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. On Sunday July 10th there will be a family and friend’s visitation, from 2:00pm-3:00pm. The service will begin at 3:00 pm, at the Blount & Curry Funeral Home 605 S. MacDill Ave. Tampa, Florida. Officiating will be Hank Galloway, Minister at Manhattan Avenue United Methodist Church. Rufus was a family man and involved in the community. He coached little league baseball, was a scout leader, and was always involved in school and church activities. Rufus was a kind, generous, loveable man who always had a smile on his face and a story to tell. His memory for stories was amazing. Sometimes these stories were a little more embellished than the last time, but that was part of the fun. He grew up the baby of 15 children. All of his siblings had already left home by the time Rufus began school. Rufus and Margaret will both be interred at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.
