Sylvia was born on September 5, 1931 in West Tampa where she grew up and attended Jefferson High School. She married her high school sweetheart, Thomas Alberdi, Jr., and settled in Tallahassee where they raised their three children. Sylvia was a woman ahead of her time, with a successful career working in the Florida Senate as one of the first female Staff Directors. Following the death of her husband, she moved back to Tampa and started a second career founding her own communications company.
While sunning on the beach in Clearwater, one of her favorite pastimes, a handsome Latvian, Eriks Dargevics introduced himself and later become her husband of 20 years until his death in 2016.
Sylvia is survived by her children, Lynn Mendoza (Kiff), Tom Alberdi (Cynthia), Tim Alberdi (Magda); granddaughters, Haley Mendoza and Nina Alberdi; grandsons, Thomas Alberdi, Brooks Alberdi, and Tony Alberdi; sister, Grace Massari, and her loving caregivers Denise and George Fowler, who along with Tim & Magda were selflessly devoted to caring for her during the past several years.
A visitation will be held at Blount & Curry – MacDill on Wednesday, February 7th from 6pm-8pm. A funeral mass will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church at 2:00pm on Thursday, February 8th. Sylvia will go to her final resting place following the funeral mass at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park in Clearwater, FL.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to LifePath Hospice in her memory, 3010 W. Azeele St., Tampa, FL 33609; their services and support to Sylvia and her family were much appreciated.
Always impeccably dressed, Sylvia loved to travel and was fortunate to have experienced the world. She would instantly become the life of the party upon entering the room. Her favorite saying was “no grass grows under my feet”. Mom – don’t let it start now. Go Gators and Godspeed to you.
