Terry was born on December 12, 1957, in San Diego, California, the daughter of Milo E. Henstrand, Jr. and Mary A. Henstrand (nee Thompson). She grew up in Maryland and graduated from Saint Mary’s High School in Annapolis in 1975. She then went on to Frostburg State College, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
After graduating from Frostburg State University, Terry worked there as college recruiter in the Admissions Department from 1979-82. Terry married Dr. Leon (Lee) R. Hoke on September 11, 1982, at Our Lady of Fields Catholic Church in Millersville, Maryland. They moved to Florida and raised their family in Tampa.
Terry later graduated from the University of South Florida with a Master of Psychology. Terry spent 32 years as a high school counselor in Hillsborough County, Florida with the last twenty years at H.B. Plant High School, Tampa, Florida. Terry retired in 2020. The H.B. Plant High School community recognized her decades of service by conferring upon her the Golden Panther Award in 2021.
As a child and teenager, Terry was a competitive swimmer and she set a record in breaststroke at Saint Andrews Swim Club in Severna Park, Maryland that stood for many years. Terry developed an interest in interior decorating and loved shopping for treasures and constantly making her and Lee’s home look like a picture out of Southern Living Magazine. Terry loved the water and boating and spent many happy hours on Tampa Bay. She was also an avid gardener and loved doing various yardwork and keeping the grass looking nice (until she discovered you can use AstroTurf in Tampa as a very nice substitute for real grass). Terry was passionate about her vocation as a high school guidance counselor and was driven in her quest to help all her students succeed. She has a drawer full of beautiful thank you notes from students and their families that attest to the positive impact she made on so many students’ lives. What Terry really loved most was her family, having fun with her husband, raising her daughter and spending time with her grandchildren. Terry was devoted wife to Lee, a doting mother for her daughter, M.J., and later reveled in taking care of her two grandchildren, Avery and Milo (which means she loved spoiling them every day!).
Remaining to cherish Terry’s memory are her husband, Lee Hoke; Daughter Mary Jean (M.J.) Kopakin (Brian Kopakin), her two grandchildren, Avery Kopakin and Milo Kopakin; and her two brothers, Robert Henstrand and James Henstrand; and a sister-in-law Judith Roarty.
Preceding Terry in death are her parents, Mary and Milo Henstrand.
