Betty Joan Atkins

It is a glorious day when one of God’s children is called home to be with Jesus. On Monday July 6, 2026, Betty Joan (Perkins) Atkins took her journey home. Betty was surrounded by family and loved ones as she went to be with her Lord and Saviorat the age of 89.

Betty was born on August 17, 1936, in Piper City, Illinois to Francis and Pauline Perkins.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Hermon H. Atkins; parents, Francis and Pauline Perkins; three sisters and four brothers; and grandson, Isaac A. Atkins.

She will be lovingly remembered by her children: Carl Atkins (Betty) of Lampasas, TX; Ernie Atkins (Susan) of Thorndale, TX; Al Atkins (Jaboa) of Taylor, TX; Lisa Heck (Mitchell) of Red Oak, TX; and Curtis Atkins (Daphene) of Thorndale, TX. As well as by many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Early on, Betty was a high school basketball defensive star, lettering multiple times. She went on to havemany careers in her lifetime. After owning a beauty salon, she selflessly prioritized her family above all else, leading her to take jobs driving a special-needs school bus, working as secretary of the police department, and working for the county as a jailor, booking officer, and kitchen manager, all while raising a family. With Hermon and kids in tow, the Air Force moved them not only around the United States, including to Hawaii, but also around the world to Japan.

Learning and teaching were lifelong traits. Betty never met a stranger. If you were around her for any time at all, you were likely taught how to crochet or bake or sew. Her infectious laugh and smile could be identified across the room. Whether on a cruise or road trip, she loved to travel, see new places, and most of all, visit family and meet new people to call family.

A celebration of Betty’s life will be held on Friday, July 10, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran church in Thorndale, TX.
