During his high school years, he worked on the family farm, boxed in the Golden Gloves, and earned two saddle bronc riding trophies. In August 1954, he married his high school sweetheart, Irene Garrett of Hutto. They were married over 67 years and were blessed with a daughter Kim and a son Michael.

He worked on numerous buildings in Austin, including the Scarbrough Building, the University of Texas at Austin, and the Texas Capitol during their renovations.
