LTC (Ret.) James Michael “Mike” Callahan James Michael “Mike” Callahan, 70, of Lexington, passed away peacefully on Thursday October 17th. Mike was born on July 14, 1943 in Tulsa, OK and was the son of the late W.P. and Marvin Funk. He graduated from Blackwell High School in 1961 and attended Oklahoma State University. He was married to Neta Callahan and they made their home in Lexington, TX. Mike served his country for over 26 years in the United States Army and his primary specialty was Signals Intelligence/Electronic Warfare. He served two tours in Vietnam and was awarded the following before retiring in 1990: Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (2), Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm and Vietnam Campaign Medal. One of his favorite stories from Vietnam was when sitting on a flak jacket saved his life when the helicopter he was in was attacked. His retirement was short-lived as he soon took a teaching position with the Taylor Independent School District, where he continued to work for an additional ten years. Mike was passionate about racing his 302 Boss Mustang as member of the 1969 Shamrock Racing Team USA in Europe. He continued his fast pace for many years upon his return to the states by participating in Rally’s, Autocrosses and Races. He was also a gifted artist and excelled in the use of pen and ink and oils. He created beautiful renditions of racing cars in their proper environment, drew realistic pictures of wildlife and had an aptitude in producing clever cartoons. Mike is predeceased by both parents and his brother Paul Funk. He is survived by his wife Neta Callahan and her children Kemara Stormont (Darren) and Kevin Berga (Colleen), his three daughters: Kelle Callahan Shymkiw (Brach), Cathy Callahan Noey (Mark) and Cindy Callahan, his sister Gini Harwell (Ben), his sister-in-law Jackie Funk, 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. And last but not least, Mike is survived by his three fuzzy companions Buddy, Holly and LaLa who provided him with continual comfort. I had a lot of classes with Mike in High School; he was always a happy person and always enjoyed having fun, making others laugh and smile. I enjoyed all the pictures of his family; I can tell he enjoyed being a father and grandfather. I do remember him enjoying drawing cartoons. He was a dedicated band member, along with his buddy David Barnett. My prayers are with all the family. Colleen Shepherd

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. May you find strength from the love of family and friends and may happy memories and times shared bring you comfort. I will miss hearing Mr. C's stories. I don't know if it's the stories I liked so much or the good time he seemed to have in the telling (and re-telling!) of a good tale. God Bless all of you.

Mike was one of a kind. A true friend since the 7th grade. He was one of the most talented people I have ever had the pleasure to know.

Neta you are a wonderful person and the love you and Mike shared was obvious.

Mike was a talented, capable member of our class of 1961. How lucky we were to have him as an important part of our early years. How accomplished he was in so many areas. He remains in our hearts. Dianne Gurley Braden

Mike was a great friend all thought high school. We had odd jobs together to make spending money. He worked with me at Sandy's Café in Blackwell and was always a delight to be with. I saw a picture today where we had flown to Pappy's fiftieth wedding anniversary. Brought back a lot of great memories. I'll miss you old friend. Rest in Peace.

May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sunshine be warm
upon your face.
May the rains fall upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.

Parents hold their children's hands for just a little while...And their hearts forever. The best of our 25-year marriage is reflected in the lives of our daughters, Kelle, Cathy and Cindy. They are now fine women with familes of their own...all of whom shine with the love and pride we gave them.

Neta, your presence in Mike's life was an ongoing comfort to him. I thank you for the love and peace you gave him.
