Jonell attended school in Temple before her family relocated to Davilla, Texas, after their home was destroyed by fire. From Davilla, she and her siblings were bused to Cameron ISD to attend O.J. Thomas School, the nearest school serving Black students at that time. She graduated from O.J. Thomas School in Cameron, Texas.
Following graduation, Jonell moved to Taylor, Texas, to attend Johns Hospital School of Vocational Nursing. She took great pride in her education and her profession. After earning her vocational nursing credentials, she worked for many years at Johns Hospital, now Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Taylor, where she faithfully cared for countless patients throughout her nursing career.
While living in Taylor, Jonell met the love of her life, Tommie L. Gage. They married and built a loving home together, raising three handsome sons: Eric, Kerry, and Cedric.
Jonell later became one of Jehovah's Witnesses and was devoted to her faith. She joyfully shared her beliefs with anyone willing to listen, and her dedication to Jehovah was evident in the way she lived her life. Her faith guided her actions and gave her strength throughout the years.
Known affectionately as "Jody" by family and friends, Jonell was an avid reader from an early age. While other children spent their free time outdoors, she could often be found inside with a book in her hands, eager to learn something new. Her love of reading remained with her throughout her life.
As the oldest sister at home when her parents were away, Jonell naturally took on the responsibility of caring for her younger siblings. She kept everyone in line with love and firmness, and even then, it was clear she possessed the caring heart and steady spirit that would make her an exceptional mother and nurse.
Jonell was special in many ways. She was modest in her dress, often choosing long pants over shorts, even during the hot Texas summers. She had a remarkable memory, beautiful handwriting, and faithfully continued the tradition of writing handwritten letters long after others had stopped. Her letters, phone calls, and warm, enthusiastic voice brought comfort and joy to those she loved. She had a way of making every conversation feel special, and those memories will be treasured forever.
Jonell was preceded in death by her parents, Mable Kellough Benson and Joe Benson Sr.; two sisters, Doris Williams and Shirley Benson; and five brothers, Donald Ray Benson, Charles Benson, Robert Benson, Rodney Benson, and Joe Benson Jr.
She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband, Tommie L. Gage; her beloved sons, Eric Gage, Kerry Gage (Michelle), and Cedric Gage; (Elizabeth), cherished grandchildren; three sisters, Betty Egleston (Willie), Sandra Russell, and Carlyn Benson; one brother, Albert Benson (Myra); along with a host of loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Jonell's life was defined by faith, family, service, and love. Her kindness, wisdom, unwavering devotion, and gentle spirit touched the lives of many. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her, but her legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
