Born in 1952, Rufina was the eldest of six children in a family of very limited means. Although poverty prevented her from receiving a formal education, she learned from an early age the language of family, love, and sacrifice, virtues that would define her entire life.
In 1969 she met the love of her life, and together they built a marriage that lasted more than fifty-seven years. Their greatest joy was the family God entrusted to them. Together they raised five children, teaching them through countless sacrifices, both great and small, that love is measured not by words but by daily acts of self-giving.
Despite never having the opportunity to attend school, Rufina became the first teacher of the faith in her home. She taught her children to go to church, to trust in God, and to understand that every blessing, every plan, and every hope ultimately rests in His hands.
Rufina never met a stranger. She welcomed everyone with warmth and quickly turned acquaintances into friends. She possessed a generous heart and found joy in helping those in need, often giving away what little she had if it meant easing someone else’s burden.
She delighted in good food, good company, shopping with family and friends, and the simple joys of life. Above all else, however, she loved God and loved His Church. Her faith was simple, sincere, and unwavering. She lived with the quiet conviction that God always provides and that every day is a gift.
Although she never earned a formal diploma, Rufina graduated with honors from the school of faith, sacrifice, and love. That education became the legacy she passed on to her children, her grandchildren, and to all who had the privilege of know her.
Her greatest legacy is not found in material possessions, but in the faith she planted, the family she nurtured, and the countless lives she touched through quiet acts of generosity and love.
Then the righteous will answer him and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?' And the king will say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me.'
(Mt. 25:34-40)
