

Amelia Cortez Vargas, age 69, of Temple devoted matriarch of the Vargas family, passed away peacefully at her home on the morning of April 17, 2018. She was born in Gatesville, TX on June 22, 1948, daughter of George and Ramona Cortez, Sr. Amelia spent her early years growing up in Moody, TX., with her mother and maternal grandparents. Amelia met her husband Edward in Temple and they married on February 18, 1969. On December 5, 1969 Amelia and Edward, started their family with their first born Edward Jr. Amelia Vargas was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, in Temple. Amelia was active in all aspects of her children's school and church activities at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, she expressed on many occasions how wonderful those years were and how those years created so many special memories. Amelia always felt her greatest accomplishment and love was her family. She was especially proud of her husband, her children, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. Spending time with them gave her great joy and was the highlight of her life. Amelia is preceded in death by her parents, George Cortez, Sr. and Ramona Garcia, her husband of 49 years, Edward Vargas, Sr. and son Edward Vargas, Jr. and brother George Cortez, Jr. Amelia leaves behind to cherish her memory her children: Pete Vargas (Ike), Tanya Gordon, Panfila Vargas (Pam), Magdalena Vargas (Maggie), and Angelo Vargas. In addition, Amelia has 14 grandchildren: Amber Vargas, Jessica Vargas, Sage Vargas, Joseph Vargas, Carlie Vargas, Hannah Gordon, Trey Vargas-Rodriguez, MaGabby Vargas-Rodriguez, Mason Gilpin, Skylan Vargas, Angelo Vargas, Jr. Carter Vargas and Tyler Vargas. Amelia was also blessed with 5 great-grandchildren. Also Surviving are her sisters Rosemary Staller, Stella Palin, Rita Cortez Resendez and Rachell Cortez Pratt. On Sunday, April 22nd, a Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 7:00pm at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home. The Mass followed by a Christian Burial, celebrating Amelia's life, will be at 1:00pm, Monday, April 23rd at Our Lady Of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will be at Bellwood Memorial Park, following mass.
