Bernice was baptized, confirmed and married at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Shiner. She attended St. Ludmilla’s Catholic school and was a member of the Junior Catholic Daughters.
Bernice married Bruno Kohl on August 18, 1962, and they remained married until his death in 2024. She was employed by the State Comptroller in Austin for four years before becoming a mother and homemaker. During those years, Bruno’s career with NCR took them to Temple, Texas; Dayton, Ohio; and Houston, Texas. While living in Houston, Bernice returned to school and worked for State Farm Insurance until her retirement in May of 2007. After 34 years in Houston, Bruno and Bernice returned to Temple to help care for their three grandsons.
Bernice loved and took great pride in her grandsons. She attended their school, band, orchestra, and sporting events, always present with a camera and a snack to share. She saved every program, photo, and memento from the many activities and milestones she so faithfully attended. She endured the brutal weather that comes with high school soccer season without complaint. Bernice also had an amazing gift for helping plants thrive and loved, and allowed, every pet imaginable over the years.
Bernice received the Sacraments of the Church and was welcomed into heaven by her parents and her husband.
She is survived by her daughters, Blaine Kohl (Brad Booth) and Belinda Kohl-Thomas (Scott Thomas); her grandsons, Harrison, Grant, and Blake Thomas; and her brother, Gregory Kurtz.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 29, at 2:00 pm at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, 306 S. Avenue F, Shiner, Texas 77984. Interment will be at Shiner Catholic Cemetery, followed by a reception at the Parish Activity Center.
