Betty Lou Johnston McEver, age 90, of Temple passed away on Friday April 20, 2018 at a local care center. Betty was born in San Angelo, TX to William Franklin Johnston and Robbie Lou Davidson Johnston on January 1, 1928. A memorial service will take place on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple. Private family burial will be at Bellwood Memorial Park. Betty married Thomas Jones McEver in Brownwood, TX on July 12, 1947, and they made Temple their home later that year. She was a graduate of Temple College and the University of Mary Hardin Baylor majoring in Education. Betty was employed by Temple Independent School District for 20 years as a first-grade teacher having taught at Jefferson, Emerson and Cater Elementary Schools. She believed it was her responsibility to provide a foundation for success, sprinkled with love, to each of her students. She also loved teaching Sunday School, participating in Bible studies and realized her dream of travelling to the Holy Lands with her dear friend, LaFon Ditzler. Over the years, she served as an officer and member in many Church, Civic, and Local organizations. Betty was a wonderful cook and prepared as many meals for others as she did for her own family. You could drop by their home any time for fun, fellowship, a fresh cup of coffee and a piece of homemade pie. She was an avid reader, seamstress, quilt maker and made most of her own holiday decorations. Playing dominoes and Skip Bo with her friends at the Meridian gave her many hours of enjoyment over the past 10 years. She is survived by three daughters, Roberta Amos and husband Charles of Temple, Patricia McEver of Temple, and Bonnie Estes and husband Greg of Henderson, TX; grandchildren, Neely Jones, Thomas Estes, Taylor Estes Gin and great grandson, Thomas Lee Estes. She was preceded in death by her husband, T J (Mac), parents, brothers Bill Johnston and George Johnston and sister Laura Butler. Betty’s family wishes to thank her friends and the staff at Brookdale Meridian for their friendship and care and most recently, Scott and White Hospice. Betty requested, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to your Church of choice, Temple College Foundation Scholarship at www.tcfound.org or University of Mary Hardin Baylor Scholarship Fund at www.umhb.edu UMHB Giving, Box 8433, 900 College Street, Belton, TX 76513.
