Bobby served his country in the United States Navy. He worked for Santa Fe Railroad for 38 years as a switchman and a conductor. He was a member of NARVRE (National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees), the American Legion #133 in Temple and the Taylors Valley Water Board. He was a faithful member of Taylors Valley Baptist Church since 1945, and he proudly served on the Academy ISD School Board for nine years.
After returning from the Navy, he married his forever love, Mary Etta White on November 2, 1957.
Bobby was a husband, Dad and Papa who loved and cherished his family with an overflowing sense of pride. It showed in his smile when he spoke of them. Bobby was a man who talked about his love for Jesus often. He loved old hymns and good country music. He was known for sharing a good book and many, many wild tales with the people he loved. Bobby Underwood was known for being a proud Bumblebee. He was a lifelong Bee fan after graduating from Academy ISD in 1952, and even when he could not make the games, he sat in his living room cheering on his Bumblebees. He found joy in watching his family grow, visiting the beach, fishing, working in his yard, growing his garden, playing golf especially on Wednesdays with his brother, and enjoying a big bowl of Blue Bell ice cream. Throughout his life, Bobby continued to be a devoted patriot.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, his children, Cynthia Trainer and husband Gordon of Little River-Academy, Randall Underwood and wife Kathy of Liberty Hill, Karen Tomlin and husband Mickey of Sparks, and Robert Underwood and wife Dana White of Little River-Academy, grandchildren, Kali Trainer, Emily Tumey, Brice Trainer and wife Amanda, Colter Underwood and wife Raquel, Zachary Underwood, Kaci Kleypas and husband Landon, Shanda Underwood, Shelby Thurston and husband Lyle, Trent Underwood, Rian White, Rhea White, and Reid White, and great-grandchildren, Kennedy, Colt, and Rhett Trainer, Axton Tumey, Weston, Carson, Ava, and Avery Underwood, Graci, Ryder, Maxx, and Tripp Kleypas, and Trae Thurston. Bobby is also survived by his sisters Jean Ann Rucker and husband Mike of Salado and Carolyn Latham and husband Don of Temple.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Gifton and Donnie Underwood, and a grandson Joshua Tomlin.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Bobby's name to the Josh Tomlin FFA Scholarship Fund at Academy ISD would be appreciated.
There are some who bring a light so great to the world that even after they have gone, the light remains.
