

Carl Eugene Furlow went to be with The Lord on Thursday, January 1, 2015 surrounded by the love of his family and peace sustained through his lifelong love of the Savior. Services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, January 3, at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home with Dr. Ron Milne and Rev. Eddie Humphrey officiating. Burial will follow at Bellwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 1:30 - 2:00 PM prior to the service. Mr. Furlow was born in the small, East Texas town of Huxley on August 25, 1929. His childhood on a farm was filled with fun and hard work. This set the tone for a life full of laughter and a great work ethic. He married Margaret Ann Barlow on August 16, 1952 in his parent's home in Shelbyville. He cherished his daughter and son and delighted in his grandchildren. In 1947, after graduating from Shelbyville High School, Carl joined the U.S. Military and served in Korea. When he returned from service, he attended Flores Business School in Houston. During his studies, he mastered Morse code and began his career in 1952 as an Operator for the Santa Fe Railroad in Cleveland, Texas. He traveled, working in many small towns, until 1955 when he was promoted to the dispatcher's office in Galveston, Texas. Santa Fe consolidated the Galveston and Temple offices and in 1966 he moved his family to Temple. In 1990 Santa Fe merged with Burlington Northern and Carl completed his career in Fort Worth. After 40 years of devoted service he retired in February of 1992. During his 40 year career he witnessed every technological advancement from Morse code to computers. As a dedicated father, Carl volunteered and served in many capacities. His sense of humor and love for children made him the perfect man for the job. He taught Sunday school and lead the RA's for many years at Immanuel Baptist Church where he has been a member for 45 years. He also served as Boy Scout Master for his sons, Randy and Ken. He was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge 32nd Degree. Carl was predeceased by his son Randy Furlow of Temple, parents Garland and Neva Furlow of Huxley, and a brother Buck Furlow of Keithville, LA. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Ann Furlow, daughter Carla Furlow Fisher and her husband Doug Fisher all of Temple, son Ken Furlow and wife Linda Kilmer of Miami, Florida, sister Nell Jobe of Shreveport, LA and brother Dan Furlow of Homer, LA. Carl will also be remembered as a fun loving grandfather by his grandchildren who lovingly called him PaPa: Blayne Fisher of San Antonio, Caitlynn Fisher of Fort Worth, Michael Furlow and Alan Furlow of Miami, Florida and two step grandchildren Josh Kilmer, and Jake Kilmer of Miami, Florida.
