

Carrie Frances Lyon Crews, 96, of Temple, passed away April 26, surrounded by her loving family. Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Temple on Saturday, May 2 at 10 a.m. with graveside services later the same day at 4 p.m. in Lindale, Texas, at Bethesda Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7:00 p.m. at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home on Friday, May 1. Services will be conducted by Rev. Dr. Ken Ritchie, minister of Temple First Presbyterian Church and Rev. Dr. Warner Bailey, retired Presbyterian minister from Fort Worth. Mrs. Crews was born to Henry Grady and Frances "Fannie" Elizabeth Kennedy Lyon in Lindale, Texas, on May 31, 1918, and grew up in the Sabine Community. She graduated from Lindale High School. She married Logan Walter Crews on March 20, 1942 and they lived in several Texas cities including Athens, Mt. Pleasant, Wortham, Hubbard, Corsicana, and retired in Temple. Frances lived a long and blessed life. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Temple for more than 50 years. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Wortham where she served as Worthy Matron. She was an outstanding seamstress and an excellent cook. She was very talented at the art of crocheting and piecing quilts, creating blankets for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition, she was an avid gardener whose skill was known for producing abundant vegetables and beautiful flowers. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law Laura Nell and Phil Higgins of Huntsville, daughter and son-in-law Kathy Frances and Mark Erskine of Temple, and son and daughter-in-law Steven Logan and Renee Crews of Magnolia. Known affectionately as "Grannie," she is survived by seven grandchildren: Shawn Higgins and wife, Stacie of Rogers, Newton Erskine and wife, Jen of Belton, Shelley Higgins Cole and husband, John of Spring, Todd Erskine and wife, Amy of Temple, Travis Erskine and wife, Natasha of Bellaire, Cary Erskine and wife, Andrea of Belton, and Connor Crews of Hollywood, California. She is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by three sisters, Ernestine Whipple and husband, Raymond of Paris, Texas; Juanita Chambless of Greenfield, Indiana; and Martha Jo Birtcher and husband Curtis, of Tyler, Texas along with numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Mrs. Crews was preceded in death by her husband, Logan Walter Crews, whom she was married to for nearly 73 years, her parents; two brothers, James Norris Lyon and Henry Dewey Lyon; and three sisters, Bonnie Mae Linnstaedter, Marjorie Lee Lyon, and Vestal Rebecca Hicks; and one grandson, Carter Logan Crews. The family expresses its gratitude to the staff of Tender Mercies for providing support, love, and compassionate care to Mrs. Crews.
