

Commander Leon Y. Wald, age 88, passed away on Nov. 25th at the Temple V.A. Hospital after a hard fought battle with leukemia & will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Mildred (Midge) Wald; his daughter Linda Gibson & her husband Dr. Jeff Ray Gibson, Jr.; his grandchildren Jeremy R. Gibson of Vancouver, Amanda E. Gibson of Orlando, & Kathryn (Katy) Gibson of Austin; and many nieces and nephews. Lee was born in New York City on Aug. 8, 1920, but always considered his farm near Gettysburg, PA to be his home. Lee loved life & traveling. He began his journey to see the world with the U.S. Navy prior to World War II and later served as an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard for over 20 years. His duty stations included New York; Baltimore; Port Arthur, TX; Honolulu; New Orleans; St. Louis, MO; & Washington, DC. In 1987, he and Midge moved to Temple to be with their family. Lee was a member of the Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years and belonged to the Karem Shrine in Waco and the Knob Creek Lodge in Temple. He was also a member of the Elks, the Sojourners, and the Retired Officers Assn. He and Midge belonged to the First United Methodist Church. The funeral service will be at 12 noon on Tues., Dec. 2 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple with Rev. Hubert Austin officiating. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 PM at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
