

Charlotte Ann Smith, age 72 of Temple, died Thursday, November 24, 2011 at a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, November 28, 2011 at Heights Baptist Church with Rev. Billy Koinm and Dr. Tom Henderson officiating. Entombment will follow at Bellwood Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive visitors from 5-7:00 PM Sunday, November 27, 2011 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home. Mrs. Smith was born on October 1, 1939 in San Antonio, Texas to the late Thomas Wharton Haydon, Sr. and Nell Eugenia Pitts Haydon. She graduated from Temple High School in 1958 and also graduated from Seton School of Nursing in New Orleans, Louisiana as a Registered Nurse. Charlotte married Mack Smith on July 20, 1963 in Temple. If Charlotte Smith could be summed up in one word, that one word would be "Love". She lived her life humbly and selflessly, and she loved with her whole heart. She served those who served in the Armed Services for over 30 years as a registered nurse at the Temple VA Hospital. During her 33 years at the Temple VA Hospital, Charlotte received numerous awards, including the Golden Apple Award for patient education and the prestigious VA Administrator's Hands and Heart Award. She also had two articles published in national nursing journals. The most recent article was published in the Association of Operating Room Nurses Journal and received a second place writer's award at the national AORN convention in Anaheim, Calif. Mrs. Smith was actively involved in public awareness of operating room nursing care and initiated and implemented OR Nurses Day programs which involved area elementary schools, high schools, as well as the VA employees. In addition, she created several educational films for patients to view prior to surgery. After retirement, Charlotte taught in the OR Scrub Tech program at Temple College and was the editor for the Wildflower Antique Car Club newsletter. She enjoyed oil painting and she adored her grandchildren immensely. Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas W. and Nell Pitts Haydon, Sr. and a sister, Frances Haydon Parnell. Survivors include her loving husband of 48 years, Mack E. Smith of Temple; a daughter, Beverly Smith Pool and husband Chris of Temple; two sons, Kenneth Smith and wife Michele and Tracy Smith and wife Joanna, all of Palestine; one brother, Thomas W. Haydon, Jr. and wife Susan of Ft. Worth; nine grandchildren, Kayla LeCheminant, Beth Smith, Alicia Stewart, Miah O'Neal, Ethan Smith, Coran Smith, Evan Pool, Haydon Pool and Reagan Pool; and one great grandchild, Kaysen LeCheminant. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Charlotte's name to Heights Baptist Church, 1220 S. 49th Street, Temple, Texas 76504.
