I had the pleasure of spending time with David in Austin shortly before his death. He was his usual jovial, gracious and kind self. He will be missed. One of the people we met with said this: "From the short time I knew David, he seemed to be a stand up fellow, loyal company man, and great business and technical leader. I can imagine with all his years at McLane Group, he will be sorely missed. My heart goes out to his loved ones. " Blessings to the Rutland family. Craig

Back in 2008, my wife and I flew to Columbus, Ohio to meet a bunch of strangers that we had become acquainted with 'Online'. We were understandably nervous about what might happen but we both relaxed when Dave introduced himself. My wife and I were both about 15 years older than him but he was the consummate host and a very humorous guy. I will miss his friendship, advice and wit. Godspeed from Retired Geezer and Mrs. Geezer

Dear Pat, Dave was a such wonderful person and a dear friend to so many. As you know, he was also an amazing bass player. We used to dress up as the blues brothers when our band would play a gig. Dave’s great sense of humor was infectious, he had me laughing every time I spoke with him. Mine and Janet’s thoughts and prayers are with you. Cliff

Condolences to the family. I knew Dave from Twitter, and he was one of the few who made that place worthwhile. I am in OKC, and we compared shared weather events. He was always spot-on with his insightful comments on politics, music, BBQ, and love of animals. I will miss him greatly. Extra scritches for Sadie during this difficult time.

I knew Dave for almost 20 years online, and met him half a dozen times over the years. He was an amazing combination of irreverent humor and genuine caring. Condolences to his family for their loss.

My heart breaks for his family as I remember how kind, gentle and patient Dave was. Not to mention quite the sense of humor to put up with our antics in the office (and join in on some)! I had the honor to work for Dave at McLane a number of years ago and he truly was a mentor in every sense. He will be dearly missed!

David had a good sense of humor. One day I said something that didn't get the best response from one of the female colleagues and I tried to correct it but I was actually making it worse. David responded to that and said "Don't dig a deeper hole Fernando." as he walked away. So... evidently he was also very wise. David was my supervisor up the chain and I just remember him being kind, honest, and quite patient. We will miss him.

David, Last night I wrote my thoughts to you about your amazingly blessed life. But I left out four people that had as much influence on your being who you were as anyone did. Jesus, Kim, Linda and Amy. God surrounded you with 7 of His greatest accomplishments, second only to Jesus. You were truly blessed.

We did not live close for nearly 40 years David but you, Pat, Jessica and Abby have been in our prayers often and daily for most of those years. God blessed you greatly with the mom, dad, wife and two girls He gave you. Why He chose to take you now is really hard to understand. You brought so many pluses to so many while you were here. Your dad was always considered to be my brother rather than my uncle and Faye felt that also. We are proud to have had you in our family for the time we did have you. Rest In Peace our brother. We shall miss you greatly.
