
A private graveside service for Dixie DeAun Stoneman Tharp, age 80, of Temple, TX will be held at Bellwood Cemetery in Temple. Visitation will take place on Friday, October 31, 2014 from 6pm-8pm at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple. Dixie passed away on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 in Temple. Dixie was born on February 9, 1934, in Brownfield, TX, to Lester Stoneman and Edna Jackson Stoneman. She graduated from Brownfield High School in 1951. On June 4, 1953 in Brownwood, TX she married Raymond Roy Tharp of Rogers, TX. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from Howard Payne University in 1954, California Teacher Certification from Humboldt State University in Arcata, CA in 1956, and a Masters of Science in Education degree from Baylor University in 1971. For 35 years she was a teacher and during that time, she was twice named Teacher of the Year by the Belton Chamber of Commerce. Also she was selected as Teacher of the Year by the Belton Independent School District. She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, Texas Retired Teachers Association, and Phi Delta Kappa. Through the years, she was active in the Baptist churches where her husband was pastor. In the summer of 1993, she and her husband were volunteers for the Baptist International Mission Board and taught English in Tartu, Estonia. After retiring, she and her husband enjoyed several cruises and trips abroad. Her interest in genealogy led to trips to Illinois, New York City, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Survivors are her husband Raymond R. Tharp of Temple; one daughter Carla Jean Cleveland and husband, James, of Troy; one son, Gregory Scott Tharp and wife, Fela, of Waco, two brothers, Lynn Goldston of Longview, TX and Foy Goldston of Dallas, TX; a sister, Reva Lovelace Brownfield, TX; four grandchildren, Andrea McLean, Diana Cleveland, Emily Cleveland, and Lydia Cleveland. She is preceded in death by her father Lester Stoneman, a sister, Les Berryhill, a sister, Leah Ash, and her mother, Edna Jackson Stoneman Goldston.
