

Donald Oliver Worrall, CSM retired of Temple, Texas died Sunday Dec. 8, 2013 in a Temple Hospital. He was born March 11, 1933 in Pittsburgh, PA to Ernest and Kathryn Jones Worrall. He is survived by Kathryn Hays Worrall, wife, Alan Worrall, son; Ray and Jeni Worrall, son and daughter-in-law, Laura Worrall Shushan and husband Mordi Shushan, daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and David Shushan, grandchildren, a number of step children and step grandchildren whom he loved and who loved him dearly. Don was a career soldier, spending 31 years in the US Army. He served with the Occupation Forces in Germany and Austria following World War II. He had 3 combat tours, one in Korea and 2 in Viet Nam and well as numerous tours in other parts of Europe and Asia. Don was awarded many medals and commendations including a Bronze Star and 2 Purple Hearts. While in the Army, Don earned his high school equilvalency diploma, his Bachelor's degree and 3 Master's degrees. He taught college History for 18 years following his discharge from the Army. He wrote 2 books on History and was an authority on the American Civil War. Don was a member of many organizations; among them the American Legion, VFW, US Cavalry Association, 4th Cavalry Association, US Constabulary Association. He and Kathryn enjoyed traveling to the various reunions and bivouacs of these associations, all over the USA. Don adored his family and was always delighted to see his daughter, Laura her husband, Mordi and her children, Rachel and David, his son Ray and daughter-in-law Jeni visited often and Don enjoyed their visits so much. Don loved traveling. He often recounted touring Europe when his children were small, in a Volkswagen camper. Later in life, Don and Kathryn, along with his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Bob and Jacque Knapp, enjoyed traveling together. Their first trip to Seattle, Washington was so much fun, that they traveled again to Europe and then to Hawaii. Don loved ice hockey, first playing it with his friends on icy ponds in Pennsylvania when he was very young and then in the last few years, going to see the Dallas Stars with his hockey loving step granddaughters, Summer, Shannon and Brianna. Don was loved by so many friends and family and will be greatly missed in their lives. Don was a Missouri Synod Lutheran, confirmed at Trinity Lutheran in Copperas Cove, TX. and currently a member of Immanuel Lutheran in Temple, TX. Many thanks to the doctors who helped him with so many health problems, especially Dr. Allan Nichel, Nephrologist, who treated him, counseled him and befriended him. Thanks also to Ben Covington, M.D. and Lori Covington, CRNI, for so many hours of help in so many situations. Also to Chris and Lita Hayes for taking time off their jobs to come and spend a week helping move Don and Kathryn to Temple, and sell their home in Copperas Cove. And to Pastor Schey from Trinity Lutheran and Pastor Michalk from Immanuel Lutheran, we thank you for all your visits and prayers and encouragement. Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Thursday at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home 3110 Airport Road in Temple with burial in Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery.
