Jackie Auvenshine officiating. The family will receive visitors from 6-7:00 P.M. Thursday, June 14, 2012 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home, Temple, Texas. Doris was born on November 24, 1918 to Delmer and Elizabeth Singleton at home in DeLeon, Texas. She graduated from DeLeon High School in 1937 and then moved to Temple, Texas to attend the Scott & White Nursing School. She graduated in 1940 and became a licensed registered nurse shortly thereafter. When driving to DeLeon on weekends, she often stopped at Camp Hood to provide a ride for some of the Army troops that lived near her hometown. She wanted to give them as much time with their families as possible before going to war. Doris met the love of her life, James A Brockway, on a blind date during World War II. She worked at Scott & White Hospital for Dr. J. V. Brindley while waiting for Jim to return from World War II. Upon his return from Germany, they married in Temple, Texas on December 12, 1945. The newlyweds moved to Waco, Texas where Doris raised her family while working at Hillcrest Baptist Hospital. She also handled the bookkeeping for Westview Auto Clinic, the business she and Jim owned and operated. Doris retired from Hillcrest Baptist Hospital in 1984 as the head nurse on the surgical floor. Time away from the hospital included her favorite pastimes of gardening, crocheting, and cooking. Her father, Delmer, sang in a gospel quartet where she developed a true love for gospel music and spent many hours listening to those songs that were so special to her. She will always be remembered for those wonderful desserts for any family gathering and all of the chocolate chip cookies baked as loving gifts for her grandchildren. In 1994, Doris relocated to Temple to be closer to her children and the grandchildren she so dearly loved. In 2003, she moved to Hearthstone/Elmcroft Assisted Living where she resided until her death. She was well known as a devoted caregiver to many of the residents there. Doris was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Brockway, one son Randy Neil Brockway, parents, Delmer and Elizabeth Singleton, and a brother Deloyn Singleton. She is survived by her sons, James Michael and Debbie Brockway of Temple, Paul David and Jamie Brockway of Ft. Worth, and one daughter Dona and George Shine of Belton; twelve grandchildren, James W.
