
Dr. Ronald H. Hayward died at Scott and White Hospital on June 16, 2009 at the age of 81. A memorial service will be held Monday, June 22 at 1:00 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church in Temple with Father David Alwine officiating. Ron was born on November 7, 1927 at Island Bay in Wellington, New Zealand. He graduated from Wellington College in 1945 and Otago Medical School in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1951. After developing an interest in surgery, he spent a year as a demonstrator in anatomy at the medical school and then spent three years at Dunedin Hospital where he became Resident Surgical Officer in 1955. He passed the final examination and became a Fellow of the College, the youngest person at the time to have achieved such membership. To further his career, he did a Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. While at the Mayo Clinic, he received the Alumni Award for Meritorious Research and also his Ph.D. in Surgery from the University of Minnesota and completed his training in cardiothoracic surgery. In 1964, after a 2½ year partnership surgical practice in Fort Worth, he was offered a position at Scott and White Clinic in Temple and began the new field of cardiac surgery for the institution. In 1976, he became head of Department of Surgery, which he held until 1989, and was also elected to the Clinic Board of Directors. He was also a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Texas A&M College of Medicine from 1979-1989. He formally retired from practice in1993. Ron developed a love of sea and boating at an early age in New Zealand. After retirement, he and his wife, Elizabeth Wells, spent 10 years cruising the waters of the Northwest, including two lengthy trips to Alaska. Following retirement and traveling the Northwest, he wrote a book on the many archetypal concepts held by the human kind titled Mind, Self, and Spirit. Exposing Immortal Images. Dr. Hayward is survived by his Wife of nearly 48 years, Elizabeth and three children: Maureen Venable and her daughters Meagan and Brooke; Whitney John Hayward; and Jennifer Bates, her husband, David Bates and their children Everett, Parker and Owen. Also, He is survived by his niece Anna Hayward-Smith and her husband, Edward of Blenheim, NZ; Roger Hayward and wife Ariya of Blenheim, NZ. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, John and Owen and son Gregory Wells.
