A Rosary will be recited at 6PM Tuesday June 23, 2009 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple. Betty was born January 11, 1920, in Kansas City, Mo to Martin & Leona Hines. She had one sister. She graduated from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in May, 1941 and worked at the Sunflower Ordinance Plant in Olathe, Kansas. She married the love of her life, John "Jack" Flanagan on Thanksgiving Day, Nov.20, 1941. They were so proud of their many long years together. Upon the birth of their first born, Jack Jr., in March 1944, Betty hung up her nursing cap to become a full time wife and mother and what a mom she was!! Two more children followed, Jan Flanagan Janczak in August, 1948 & Ann Flanagan Miller in November, 1960. Mom loved her family and friends so much. Warm cookies, homemade jellies, and her famous coke cake were always available. Her favorite question to anyone who entered her home was, "Can I get you something cold to drink and a little something to eat?" If you answered "No thanks", she'd bring it to you anyway and all loved it! Mom and Dad moved from Kansas City to Temple in 1971. Having never lived anywhere else but KC, this was quite an adjustment. As a matter of fact, the story goes that Mom didn't really fully unpack for 2 years! It didn't really take that long & as the days and years passed, Temple became home. She loved her church, St. Luke's, and served her Lord through the Altar Society and many years on the bereavement committee. She also was a volunteer as a "Yellow Bird" at Scott & White. Through the years, 8 grandsons came along. These were additional loves of her life. Peanut butter sandwiches, kool-aide, and those homemade cookies were always available. When someone would mention, "Oh! No granddaughters??" She would say, "No, but that's okay cuz we LOVE our boys and wouldn't change a thing!" Thru the years that followed, Mom & Dad (Nana & Poppa) were the center of all family gatherings. Mom would bring her deviled eggs, frozen fruit salad cups, and of course her desserts! Scoliosis & arthritis took a toll on Mom's back. How she suffered yet no one knew. Mom always ALWAYS had that beautiful smile on her face and will be lovingly remembered. Survivors include husband, John "Jack" Flanagan; son Jack Flanagan, Jr. and wife Sue of Boerne, TX; 2 daughters, Jan Janczak and husband Marty Janczak of Temple, and Ann Miller and husband Van of Brenham, TX. Grandchildren are Pat Flanagan & wife, Kris of Portland Oregon; Dara Smith of Austin; Michael Janczak and wife Kristi of Temple; Rob Janczak of Seattle, Washington; Jeff Janczak of Austin, TX; and Andrew Janczak and wife, Cara of Dallas, TX. Also, Matthew Miller of Dallas, Joseph Miller of Waco, and Joshua Miller. She is also survived by 6 great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be her grandsons as listed above.
