
Funeral services for Estes Pearl (E.P.) Spurlin, 84, of Temple will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday at Scanio Harper Funeral Home with Rev. Hubert Austin officiating. Burial will be in Bellwood Memorial Park. Mr. Spurlin died Thursday in a Temple Nursing Home. Mr. Spurlin was born June 14, 1924 at The Grove to Thomas J. Spurlin and Mary Geiselbrecht Spurlin. He graduated from Flat High School and Temple Jr. College. He worked as a teller for First National Bank. He and two of his fellow tellers went to the recruitment office on their lunch hour at the start of World War II and enlisted. Each went into a different branch of service. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, having spent three years in the Pacific. He married Frances Houy in Moody July 18, 1948. She preceded him in death in 2006 after 58 years of marriage. After his military service he returned to First National Bank and retired after forty three years. He served as Vice President in personal lending for the last thirty years of his employment. He was active in military affairs for many years, having served as District Commander of the VFW where he was named outstanding District Commander of Texas. He also served on a National Committee of the VFW. He was active in the AUSA and was a member of the Temple Chamber of Commerce and First United Methodist Church of Temple. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Bill Spurlin and a nephew Wesley Coufal. Survivors include his sister-in-law Helen Spurlin; several nephews and nieces Mike Spurlin, David Spurlin, Otis Coufal, Donnie Coufal, Ronnie Coufal, Janis Anderson, David Coufal, Richard Coufal and Deanna Mueller. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Temple Building Fund or to the charity of choice. Visitation will be from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Friday at Scanio Harper Funeral Home.
