Fern Lavon Ingram Herring, age 94 of Belton, formerly of Georgetown, was born in Akeley, Minnesota on May 16, 1925, and moved around to various towns in northern Minnesota as her father, who was a preacher, was assigned to different churches. She passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2020 at a local care center. She graduated from high school in Akeley, then moved to Rochester, Minnesota to start a nursing career at the Mayo Clinic. For health reasons, she changed her career path, then met and married Henry (Hank) Schwager. They started their family with 2 sons, Bill and Don. Life changed and she and her sons moved to Austin, Texas to be near her other family. She then met and married Dewey Mears and their daughter, Glenda, was born. Dewey adopted Bill and Don in 1957. Fern assisted Dewey in his photographic business during their marriage which lasted 13 years.
Fern then rekindled her friendship with Curtis Herring and they fell in love and married in 1965. Fern’s children, along with Curt’s children, Karan, Keith and Cyndi, became a strong and loving family. In the late 1970’s, they left their careers in Austin to pursue their dream of establishing a home in Winter Park, Colorado and enjoyed new friendships and the beautiful mountain scenery. They moved back to Texas in 1998 to be closer to family and enjoyed being near everyone again.
Fern loved her family, her church, and was active in several organizations, including the Eastern Star. She also loved to paint and create wonderful ceramics and was able to share this talent. Curtis preceded Fern in death in 2007, and she is now with him in Heaven.
