Fred T. Green, age 90, of Salado passed away on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at a local hospital. He was born on February 6, 1927 in Wills Point, Texas, the son of Bruce and Lizzie Green. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 13, 2017 from 5:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home 3110 Airport Rd Temple, Texas 76504 Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home, Rev. Jonathan Mellette officiating, with burial at Greathouse Cemetery in Temple. Fred was a WWII Veteran, serving from 1945 to 1947 in the United States Army Air Forces stationed in Japan. His primary duty was as a cryptographic security officer coding and decoding messages for General Douglas MacArthur. Following his honorable discharge, with the rank of Sergeant, he went to work for Pioneer Airline in flight operations at the Temple Airport. He was transferred to the Fort Hood Airline ticket office, where he worked for both Pioneer and Braniff Airlines. On August 20, 1952, he married Novalene Caffey in an early morning ceremony in Temple. Their honeymoon was to Cuba, Central, and South America; a trip he had won by selling more tickets than any other agent. In 1957, Fred and Novalene became the owner/operators of the Buckhorn Poultry Ranch just south of Belton and ran the Ranch for almost 40 years, officially retiring in 1992. Fred had the distinction of having the longest continuing contract providing high quality farm fresh eggs to Fort Hood. Family and family gatherings were important to Fred. He loved Novalene very much and took great pride in all his family and their accomplishments. He enjoyed telling a good story and always had plenty of pictures to show. Fred insisted his boys were polite, respectful, and understood the value of a strong handshake and keeping your word. With any issue, he was either your strongest advocate or your strongest opponent---never any middle ground. He thrived on adventure and often took the trail less traveled. Fred was an avid hunter, fisherman, and outdoorsman, enjoying many a day afield spending time with his hunting and fishing buddies at the Barefoot Ranch in Bend, TX. He made sure his sons learned to love the great outdoors as much as he did. He was a founding member of the Chisholm Trail Archery Club in Salado, as well as a member of the Texas Field Archery Association, National Field Archery Association, and lifetime member of the NRA. He was a longtime member of the Oak Park United Methodist Church and Scoutmaster for Troop #115 in Salado for many years. Fred is survived by his wife Novalene of Salado, sons Brad Green and wife Betsy of Houston and Brady Green and wife Maria of San Antonio, a granddaughter Virginia Flippin and husband Robbie of London, England, a grandson Jason Green and fiancée Krystal Pratt, and many extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Cliff, Jay T, Malcolm, and Raymond Green, and sisters Mildred Hamilton and Margaret Dean. The family thanks the medical & oncology staff at the Vasicek Cancer Center, as well as, Scott & White Hospital, SW Home Health and Hospice for Fred’s care over the past 15 months. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Oak Park United Methodist Church, The Boy Scouts of America, or to the donor’s charity of choice would be appreciated.
