A memorial service will take place on Monday, December 13, 2021 at 10:00am at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple, Texas.
Gary graduated from Temple High School in 1970. He served in the United States Army and was stationed in Kansas and Germany. Gary worked for 30 years as a lineman for Southwestern Bell Telephone before retiring in 2004.
He was an avid fisherman and loved being outdoors. As a long-time member of the Belton Bass Club, Gary won numerous fishing tournaments and placed within the top 5 in the State of Texas several times. He loved spending time with his kids and grandkids on the water fishing. He also enjoyed annual, week-long fishing trips to east Texas with longtime friends.
Gary had a passion for restoring classic cars, especially numerous 1957 Chevys he owned throughout his life. His restoration work was tedious and immaculate. He never cut a corner and always aimed for perfection. His most recent restoration that was completed just before his death was a black 1946 Chevy truck.
When not on the water or in his garage, Gary loved supporting and attending his grandkid’s baseball, softball, volleyball, and tennis games. He was their biggest fan and was always so proud of the way they played and approached their sport.
Finally, Gary became the care-giver, close buddy, and foster parent to his brother-in-law, Darrell Darr, about 20 years ago. For many years, he and Darrell would have coffee daily with their friends at various restaurants around town and attend Wildcat football games in the fall. It was rare to see either Gary or Darrell out in public without the other and without a diet coke in hand.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte of Temple, of 47 years; children: Jason Locklin and wife Anna of Temple, Jake Locklin and wife Tina of Troy, and Jen Hoelscher and husband Cory of Troy; grandchildren: Carter, Lillie, Holden, and Hudson Locklin; Ava, Morgan, and Laila Locklin; Emersyn and Hazel Hoelscher. He is also survived by a sister, Cheryl Dixon and husband Charles, and, of course, his bud, Darrell Darr.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, J.L. and Ernie Locklin, and brother, Dennis Locklin.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Soldiers Kids Involved in Fishing Fun (S.K.I.F.F.), P.O. Box 10504 Austin, Texas 78766. This program pays for guided fishing trips on Lakes Belton and Stillhouse Hollow for the kids of deployed soldiers and to the kids of soldiers who died while on active duty.
