

A memorial service for Geraldine (Gerry) Walker Miller, age 96 of Temple is scheduled for Thursday, September 29, 2016 at 2:30 P.M. at First United Methodist Church of Temple. Private graveside services will be held at Brandon-Bynum Cemetery in Hill County. Dr. Tom Robbins and Rev. Don Moore, Pastors at First Methodist, will officiate. Mrs. Miller died on September 22nd, 2016 in a Temple Meridian Health Center. Born on February 26, 1920, in Hillsboro, Hill County, Texas to Laurie Lawrence Walker and Hannah Rose Grimes Walker, Geraldine graduated from Hillsboro Schools and Hillsboro Junior College. She graduated from Texas State College for Women, now Texas Women’s University, with both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science degree. Gerry later earned a Master of Education Degree and Administrative Certificate from Texas Tech University in 1955. After graduation, Geraldine taught home economics and biology at Farwell, Texas where she met her future husband, Ermon Allen Miller. They were married on August 10, 1941, at the First Presbyterian Church in Hillsboro, Texas. In December 1941, Mr. Miller was called to active duty as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and after a brief stint as an infantry officer, he was transferred to the U.S. Army Air Corp for pilot training and received his wings in July 1944 at Stockton Air Force Base in California. During the time of Lt. Miller’s training, Geraldine became a “Camp Follower” and when he was assigned to the 1346th Army Air Force Transport Unit in Dacca, India, Mrs. Miller returned to teach school at Hillsboro High School. Mrs. Miller continued teaching school in Morton, Lamesa, and finally in Temple, Texas when Capt. Ermon Miller returned to civilian life and resumed his career with the Department of Agriculture. Her teaching career spanned more than 40 years in the Texas Public Schools, including 21 years at Thornton Elementary as a first grade teacher and then six years at Bonham Middle School as a reading teacher. During her teaching career, Gerry was active in Texas Classroom Teachers Association and Texas State Teachers Association. She also held memberships in the Belton-Temple Chapter of Retired Teachers and Lambda Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary teacher organization. Gerry and Ermon were active members of the First United Methodist Church and the Dawson SundaySchool Class for more than 50 years. They were also avid Texas A&M University fans. Mrs. Miller was an active member and officer of the Temple Garden Club and the City Federation of Women’s Clubs. She was a member of Betty Martin Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution for 42 years. Geraldine was preceded in death by her parents, Rose and Lawrence Walker, her husband, Ermon Allen Miller, and her brother, Dr. Rhey Walker of Mt. Pleasant, Texas. Survivors include sons, Michael Ermon Miller and wife, Ilene Carrington Miller of Temple; Walter Lawrence (Larry) Miller and wife, Susan Thuma Miller of Cedar Park; and a daughter, Dr. Gwendolyn Miller Beeler and husband Steve Beeler of Austin. Grandmother Miller was treasured by four grandsons: Christopher Miller and wife Jessica Edgar Miller of Leander; Chad Miller and wife Kara Smith Miller of Round Rock; Mason Miller and wife Lisa Spector Miller of Houston; and Mark Miller of Houston. Mrs.Miller is also survived by four great-grand children, Jackson and Evelyn Miller of Round Rock; and Blake and Tyler Miller of Leander. Three more Miller great-grandchildren will be born in 2016-2017. The Miller Family would like to thank the staff at Temple Meridian for their kindness and care for Gerry these past eight years. We especially appreciate the care she received the last four months in the Health Center at Temple Meridian. Family visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 from 2:00 P.M. – 4:00 P.M. at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home 3110 Airport Rd. Temple, Texas 76504.
