

Herbert Clark Chafin, 88, of Temple, Texas died December 4, 2016, in a local hospital. Mr. Chafin was born October 13, 1928 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma to James Blain Chafin and Alice Killgore Chafin. He attended high school in Berryville, Arkansas, where he met and married his first wife, Jorita Skipworth. Together they had two children, Karen Jamieson and Jan Netolicky, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Mr. Chafin was a member of the National Guard for 3 ½ years, and served in the Korean War. He was a formidable boxer for those years, and became known as Pistol. He received the Korean Service Medal for his service. In 1956, Mr. Chafin married Mary Grim. They were happily married for 21 years until her death in 1978. They had two children, Nancy Krueger of Hamilton, and Mark Chafin of Temple. In January of 1958, the family moved to Texas, where he became the manager of Western Hatcheries. He eventually bought that company, and went on to establish or acquire several successful agricultural companies, including ranches, a feed mill, and grain elevators. He was well known in the field of poultry production, and served on several boards with the Texas Poultry Association. In 1983 he received the Golden Feather Award, which is the highest award given for a lifetime of work in the industry. Mr. Chafin was an avid golfer, and enjoyed playing at many famous golf courses around the world. He was a member of the Wildflower Country Club, and continued the sport until he was 87 years old. At 84 years old, he gained notoriety by shooting 10 under his age at that same country club. He is preceded in death by his wife Mary, and his daughter Nancy. He is survived by his daughters Karen and Jan, his son Mark, nine grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. He was known for his sense of humor and incredibly quick wit, and will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Services will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, December 9, 2016 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple, Texas. A private burial service will follow for family members only.
