

Jean Kate Porter Gibbs, age 87 of Temple formerly of Normangee died Monday, June 17, 2013 in a local nursing center. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, June 24, at Houston National Cemetery. Mrs. Gibbs was born July 6, 1925 in Lavina, Tennessee to AB and Nettie McLemore Porter. The family moved to Edinburg in 1936 and then to Waco where she attended her early school years. They moved to the community of Lacy-Lakeview where she resided most of her life. She graduated from Waco High School in 1942 and attended 4-C Business College. She worked as a bookkeeper for the Veterans Administration and in civil service at James Connally Air Force Base where she met Ed Gibbs. They married in 1952 and lived in South America and Houston. They retired in 1979 and moved to the country outside of Normangee. She enjoyed playing bridge and she cared for many stray animals through the years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Normangee. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Young Gibbs on June 17, 2004. Survivors include two sons, Forrest Gibbs of Houston and Danny Gibbs of Fort Worth; two grandchildren, Corby Gibbs and Jennifer Gibbs; two sisters, Laura Mae Hopkins Murchison of Waco and Mary Alice Pearce and husband, Bob of West Covina, California; two nieces, Christy Hopkins of Garland and Laura Lynn Skala and husband, Ronnie of Temple; one nephew, Brian Pearce and wife, Diane of Redondo Beach, California and one great nephew, Stephen Skala and wife, Lindsey of San Antonio.
