

Jessie Lee White passed away Tuesday, February 23, 2016, at Park Place Manor, Belton, Texas. She was 99 years old. Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Friday, February 26, 2016 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home with Dr. Stan Blevins officiating. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Anson, Texas. Jessie Lee was born May 6, 1916 to Jesse Franklin Compton and Gertie Turner Compton in Memphis, Texas and grew up in Stamford, Texas. After graduating from Stamford High School and Business School, she married Guy Thorp White of Anson, Texas, August 28, 1937. Mr. White was employed by the Lone Star Gas Company retiring in Vernon, Texas after 41 years. During that time the family lived in several West Texas communities, coming to Temple in 1987.Jessie Lee was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a member of the Friendship Class. Until recent years, she was an active member in her church, teaching Sunday school in the early years and serving in numerous areas in her later years. She served as President of the Stamford PTA and was a den mother and Camp Fire sponsor. She was president of the WSCS of the First United Methodist Church of Killeen. While living in Killeen she served as director for the Bell County American Cancer Society, Bell County TB Society and the American Heart Fund. In 1971 she was named the outstanding Club woman of the Pierian Club in Vernon, Texas. Jessie Lee is survived by three children: Charlene Egeland and husband Ed of Temple, Jimmy White and wife Betty of Harker Heights, and Jess White and wife Jo Ann of Tyler; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy White, a brother, James David Compton, her sister Glenna Compton Westfall and a great-granddaughter, Rebecca White. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Jessie Lee may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 102 North 2nd St., Temple 76501 or to Gideons Bibles, donation cards available in churches and funeral homes.
